Now in its eleventh year, and over two thousand unique cell phone pictures later, Social Photography has become a Carriage Trade tradition, with evolving participants (both artists and non-artists) reflecting the growth of the gallery's audience, while many of the gallery's regular visitors returned for each show. As the societal consequences of social media have became more clear, the show now proposes a kind of alternative, a "progressive anachronism" where the pictures we take on our phones are shared online and printed out and shown in a physical space, without suffering the pressure to accumulate likes, or doled out based on an analysis of our preferences. Allowing for a presentation of open-ended subjects and imagery reflecting the wide range of participants’ interests as well as societal trends that might reflect current events, Social Photography has gradually become an informal ten-plus year archive of what people photograph on their phones, while, through sales of print editions, helping provide needed funding for upcoming programming.
